Chess4Life

Chess4Life LLC was founded by National Master Elliott Neff. Through his 18 years of coaching chess, Elliott recognized the great lessons for life that the study of chess provides - lessons that must be learned if one is to become successful in life, such as the value of perseverance through adversity and the priceless experience of achievement after putting in consistent effort. By encouraging students in a positive manner, chess teaches sportsmanship, good decision making, patience, planning, and learning from mistakes. Chess has also been shown to improve critical thinking skills, math competency, English skills, concentration, and spacial reasoning. Elliott's love for children and for chess can be summed up by his mission - Teaching Life Skills Through Chess.

Piano Classes

We have numerous after-school music clubs meeting at private and public schools in the Lake Washington, Bellevue and Northshore School District areas. Music clubs meet for one hour immediately after the school day is finished. Students have lots of fun learning piano and performing their favorite songs from Disney, TV, Broadway, radio and older favorites. These classes are an excellent introduction to music. Main Stem provides the instruction, a lesson book, sheet music, worksheets, a practice keyboard during lesson time, headphones, a certificate and prize.

Class time is divided into three parts: individual practice, group practice, games and theory lessons. Students spend time in individual practice using a digital keyboard equipped with headphones. Instructors lead group practice on the keyboard to emphasize rhythm, ear training and social skills. Finally, students spend some time away from the keyboards doing worksheets and participating in interactive theory exercises and music games.

Thursdays, 2:35 pm, Room 205  (starts September 29th)

Spanish and Mandarin Classes

Learners who start early are most likely to gain benefits ranging from cross-functional cognitive development to accent-free pronunciation.  And learners who start early and then stick with language acquisition throughout their lives are sure to achieve fluency and to reap its many rewards.

Research has shown that the 'language acquisition window' begins to close in the early teen years, which is why adults often struggle with learning a new language.  It reinforces the idea that children should start learning a new language as early as possible, when the brain is most primed and open to the task.

Let our native speaking teachers engage your children in the most active language class they will ever attend.  A big part of your child's success will be due to the fact that our teachers are following our dynamic Lango curriculum.  A class by class progressive system is utilized to introduce new materials while constantly reviewing what has been learned in previous classes.

Mondays, 2:30 pm, Room 205 (starts October 3rd)
