Ardmore is awarded four Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF) grants!
With the help of PTSA grant-writers Cathie Cottle, Anna Hasselqvist, Kathryn Perer and Julie Thomas our teachers received the following grants:
"The Reptile Man":
On February 3rd Scott Petersen was our "herpetologist in residence"--teaching students about a variety
of reptiles. In particular he will
encouraged students to consider habits, diet, predators, and habitat. He will highlighted human-reptile interact and
myths about reptiles. Students saw (and touched!) certain reptiles. His program for all Ardmore families in the evening was extremely well-attended and brought excitement to parents and students alike!
"Science on Wheels--Engineer it!":
Students from all grades had the
opportunity to attend a 30-minute assembly. Through demonstrations, games and
audience participation, students were introduced to various disciplines of
engineering; civil, aeronautical and structural. Students learned about the
process an engineer follows to solve a problem: design, test, re-design, and
test again, until a solution is found.
Students in Grades 3 through 5 also engaged in
one-hour lessons in the classrooms taught by teachers from the Pacific Science
Center on January 27th. 45-minute hands-on lessons were taught in individual classrooms.
Topics of study included: mechanical engineering, structural
engineering, environmental engineering, the principals of structural materials,
gears and electricity.Ardmore-All-Together:
Each
family represented at Ardmore will be given a copy of the classic: A Cricket in Times Square, along with
age-appropriate discussion questions and suggestions for making the
reading/discussion time fun and profitable.
It will be available in Spanish for the parents who read to their
children in Spanish. The book chosen
will contain one or two “virtues” our school is learning about and trying to
demonstrate on a daily basis.
During the month while families are reading
the book we will highlight the virtues exemplified in the story (e.g.,
compassion and ingenuity). We will ask students to design original
“illustrations” to the story. Mrs. Dubois will guide children in learning to using online resources such as
World Book to learn more about the geographic and historical setting of the
story. The month will culminate on April 21st when we celebrate the book with food, games and art from students.
Local Author visit:
Derek
Munson the author of the popular book Enemy Pie visited Ardmore for a half day of writing workshops. Derek took students through the creative
writing process from start to finish at a grade-appropriate level. In these writing
mini-workshops, students used their hobbies and interests as a launching pad for
their writing journey. Derek explored character development, story setting
and conflict. Students left with new ideas for creating entertaining,
active stories.
